Feb. 22, 2017: Elizabeth ("Betty") Bird Hewitt of Bronxville died peacefully on February 17, 2017. She was born on December 7, 1941, in Atlanta and was the daughter of Mary Adair Howell Bird and Francis Marion Bird.
Betty grew up in Atlanta, graduated from The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, and earned a BA in education from the University of Georgia, where she met her husband, Alfred S. ("Fred") Hewitt, on a blind date in 1963. She married Fred in 1966.
Betty was a dedicated and passionate volunteer for many organizations and charities. She spent countless hours at her beloved church, The Reformed Church of Bronxville, where she was a member for over 45 years. She served on the Great Consistory, the Chancel Guild, the Worship Council, the Pastoral and Congregational Care Council, the Music Committee, the Coming Home Committee, and many more committees.
She loved her family, her friends, and her community. She had a deep commitment to helping others and always went out of her way to be of service.
She is survived by daughter Elizabeth Adair H. Wingfield, husband David, and their two children of Tampa; daughter Annabelle Katharine and James Thomas of Tampa; daughter Tattie Bailey, husband Dave, and their two sons, Gregory and Reid, of Crested Butte, Colorado; and Tyler D. Hewitt of Boulder County, Colorado.
She is also survived by her brothers, Francis M. Bird Jr. of Atlanta and George A. H. Bird Sr. and his wife, Cornelia M. Bird, of Atlanta. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred ("Fred") Seaver Hewitt, and her sister, Mary Adair Bird Kennedy.
A private family interment is planned.
