Along with her older sister, Libby, Jean had 3 younger sisters, Barbara, Jody, and Dianne. The McVicars lived in Bronxville, Columbus, Ohio, Huntington, New York, Danbury, Connecticut, and then back to Bronxville in 1960, where Jean graduated from Bronxville High School in 1963. She completed The Foundling Hospital's 1-year nursing program, and worked in Lawrence Hospital's delivery room and for OB/GYN practices in Westchester County, Florida, and Manhattan.
Jean met Dick Mendelsohn on November 4th, 1967 at his cousin, Bruce's wedding, and they were an inseparable pair from then on. Married in July 1969 at The Reformed Church of Bronxville, the couple lived in Brooklyn Heights, Bronxville, Yonkers, and then in Hastings-on-Hudson, where they raised their daughter, Erica Lynn. They retired to Millport, New York in 2012.
Jean began working at The Reformed Church in 1980 and continued working there until her retirement in 2011. She wore many hats, one of which was wedding coordinator, as she skillfully attended to over 500 weddings through the decades. Involved in many church missions, Jean was ever present at the community Thanksgiving dinner and the biannual clothing sale. Jean's love of music led her to joining the adult bell ringers, of which she was a member for over 30 years, She was a tower bell ringer, as well.
Jean was a master quilter and avid gardener. Besides her family, nothing brought her more pleasure than working on a new quilt project or tending to her gardens.
The Mendelsohns loved exploring, They traveled the States in their camper van, a tent camper, and finally their fancy RV, making sure they visited friends and family and quilt shops along the way. Jean and Dick's final RV trip was to the Canada Maritimes for the month of August 2023. They loved Jazz cruises and enjoyed 9 of them, plus 2 bell ringers' cruises, to Alaska and The Panama Canal. They fit in numerous trips to Europe over the decades, including a rendezvous with Erica in Denmark, to revisit people and places where Jean had spent time during her year in Denmark in 1965.
