March 23, 2022: Thomas H. Weyr, an author and journalist who spent decades covering the news for both international and domestic audiences, died on Friday March 11 in his home in Bronxville, N.Y. He was 94.

Mr. Weyr spent decades in newsrooms, working for United Press International, ABC Radio Network, the Research Institute of America, and DMNews. An author as well as a newsman, Mr. Weyr published books on the history of World War II, the rise of the Playboy empire (Reaching for Paradise: The Playboy Vision of America), and the history of Vienna under Hitler through the present (The Setting of the Pearl: Vienna under Hitler).

Mr. Weyr was born on September 9, 1927, in Vienna, Austria, the son of Siegfried Weyr, an academic painter and writer, and Helene Weyr, a physician.

Following the annexation of Austria by the Nazi’s, he fled to England with his mother and in May of 1941, he and his family moved to America to escape the German Blitz of London, settling in Philadelphia. There, Mr. Weyr attended LaSalle College High School in Philadelphia and later graduated from Columbia University in 1948. In 1952 he earned a PhD from the University of Vienna.

Weyr met his third wife Nancy Shuker while at The Research Institute of America and they settled in Bronxville in 1992. Stepdaughter Allison Devlin says, “having my mother and Tom close by was a treat for me and my kids Luke and Grace because Tom was a true grandfather to them.” Tom and Nancy were avid theatre goers, and members of the MET and MOMA. They were voracious readers and enjoyed their book club in NYC. Grandchildren were a delight to them both and annual trips to the Nutcracker were enjoyed by all six. They were members of The Little Forum and Tom was a member of the Players Club in NYC and later became involved in the Gramercy Park West Association. Tom never gave up his love for art, theatre, books and a perfectly constructed gin martini.

Mr. Weyr, is survived by four daughters, Teddie Weyr of Vienna, Austria, Garret Weyr of Los Angeles, CA, Tara Nicole Weyr of Los Angeles, CA, and Sascha Weyr-Lemay of Sherman, CT; two stepdaughters, Allison Devlin of Bronxville, N.Y., and Frances Shuker-Haines of Williamstown, Mass.; a stepson, John Shuker, of Cortland Hills, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

A private service will be held at the Players Club in NYC.
