July 13, 2025: Henry Leland Coon, a longtime resident of Bronxville, New York, passed away on July 2nd at the age of 91 after a long and well-lived life devoted to family, and community.
Born in Bronxville in 1933, Hank moved with his family to Orchard Place in 1944, entering the sixth grade at Bronxville school. He graduated from Bronxville in 1951, where he played soccer and first discovered his interest in writing and journalism. He then attended Amherst College, serving as editor-in-chief of the college newspaper, “The Student”. He graduated in 1955.
Hank then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving at Fort Dix for two years. He then began a lifelong career at IBM, where his work would eventually take him to countries such as Japan, Brazil and France.
In 1957, Hank married Joanna Cherry, and the couple settled in Tarrytown, NY, raising two daughters, Emily and Jennifer. In 1972, he married Margaret Mary Greene in Bronxville, adding Scott and Suzanne Stroble to his growing family. In 1978, they welcomed their son, Andrew
In 2015, Hank relocated to Massachusetts, and in 2024, he moved to Louisville, Kentucky to be closer to Andrew and his grandchildren.
Throughout his life, Hank had a passion for sailing. He became an excellent navigator, charting adventures around the Long Island Sound, up the New England coast, down the Caribbean and all the way to Nova Scotia.
Hank dedicated much of his time volunteering to enrich the Bronxville community. He contributed significantly to the Bronxville Library, the Bronxville Centennial, and the Bronxville historical Conservancy, helping to preserve the village’s cultural and historical heritage.
He is survived by his children and stepchildren Emily, Jennifer, Scott, Suzanne; and Andrew; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Hank’s life was one of quiet service, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to those he loved. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
