March 4, 2026: James “Jim” Barry, 79, of Bronxville, New York a resident since 1979, passed away on March 1, 2026. Born on February 26, 1947, in Providence, Rhode Island, Jim lived a life defined by courage, optimism, and deep devotion to the people he loved.
Jim faced multiple sclerosis for more than forty years with extraordinary strength and grace. He refused to let the disease diminish his spirit, maintaining a positive outlook that inspired everyone around him. His resilience became one of the defining hallmarks of his life.
A graduate of St. Francis College and St. John’s University, Jim valued education deeply and carried a lifelong love of learning into every chapter of his life.
For 54 years, Jim was the beloved husband of Patricia (Hanley) Barry. Their marriage was a joyful partnership filled with laughter, travel, and shared adventures. Together, they built a life rich in family, friendship, and unwavering love.
Jim enjoyed a successful career as a marketing executive at Verizon, where he worked on numerous telecommunications initiatives. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was a passionate advocate for people with disabilities. His commitment to accessibility and equity contributed to the development of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law in 1992 by President George H. W. Bush – a legacy of which he was deeply proud.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, James and Elizabeth (Heise) Barry of West Warwick, Rhode Island. He is survived by his sister, Kathy (Barry) O’Donnell of West Warwick, and his nephews, Shane O’Donnell and Thomas O’Donnell. Jim was a devoted father to his son Brian Barry, a wonderful father-in-law to Nora (Dietsch) Barry, and a cherished grandfather to Caroline and Adrienne, who brought him immense joy.
He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his passion for history and geography, his enjoyment of running, and for his appreciation for a great beach day. For those who knew him, may they carry forward his kindness, humor, and enduring optimism.
