Nov. 13, 2024: Kevin Aidan Kinney of Bronxville New York and Castletown Rectory Pallaskenry, County Limerick, passed peacefully at home on November 11th, 2023. He was surrounded by his family and Father Wren of the Salesian College.
Beloved husband of the late Agnes Kinney from Co. Kerry, Ireland, he is survived by his loving children, Deirdre Brennan, Maura, Kevin and Beth Kinney who cared for him these past few years. He will be deeply missed by his son in law, David Brennan and daughter in law Allison, brother Donal, and sister Kathleen, as well as many cousins and friends.
Kevin was born on June 5th, 1930 to Brigid and James Kinney of Newry, Armagh. Kevin attended St. Mary’s Help of Christians grammar school. He graduated from Fordham Prep and Fordham University. He was the first in his family to achieve a college degree. He achieved 1st honors at Fordham Prep. Kevin was an accomplished athlete in his school days. His father passed when Kevin was 16 and Kevin took on responsibility for the family.
He served in the Korean War as a 1st Lt. and navigator in the Air Force.
After college, he worked at the New York Stock Exchange, Schraffts, and ultimately as a partner in the first Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in New York City. His brother in law, John Cosgrove (married to Agnes’ sister Nuala) was a partner. They built up six stores and sold the business in the early 1970’s. Kevin then opened Domus Appraisal, a business that pioneered a niche relocation appraisals, where he enjoyed close relationships with the Bronxville realty community. He ran Domus until his retirement in 2005.
He retired to Ireland and lived in Castletown Rectory, where he enjoyed the congregation at St. Mary’s Church and the neighbors in the rural community.
In 1958 on a trip with his lifelong friend Ed Atnally he visited East Durham in the Catskills and at the Weldon house met Agnes his future bride and Ed met his future bride Mary the same trip! The area was subject of a PBS documentary “At the Crossroads”, that featured its Irish history.
Kevin and Agnes were married in August 11th, 1959 in Killarney, Ireland where they spent their honeymoon.
Kevin and Agnes raised their four children ensuring a fine education, deep appreciation of Ireland, inspired work ethic and creativity. They lived in Riverdale, Cedar Knolls, and finally on the Hilltop in Bronxville.
Agnes owned the shop, Carrig Isle in Bronxville for 20 years.
Kevin loved movies—Westerns in particular. His girls and Kevin Jr. were raised on John Wayne films: The Searchers, Big Jake, The Cowboys, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and on TV, The High Chaparral. The Quiet Man was also a long time favorite.
It was appropriate that Kevin chose Veterans Day to leave. His was a life of service to the country and to his family. He represented the best of a great generation and his loss is deeply felt by family and the friends who remain.
