Jan. 17, 2018:  Anne Theresa Furey (née Martinak) of Bronxville passed away peacefully at her home on Monday evening, January 8, 2018, surrounded by her loving family. She was 83 years old.

She firmly believed that she was returning to God to be reunited with her husband of 51 years, Dr. Andrew T. Furey, who predeceased her in 2008.

She will be sorely missed by her children, Andrea (Dave Cohen) of Croton-on-Hudson; Neysa (Ludger Peters) of Mill Valley, CA; Abigail (Bill Flanagan) of Brighton, MA; and Jessica (Lary Ward) of Washington, DC; her grandchildren, Alice, Jonathan, Madeline, Grace, Aidan, Timothy, and Trevor; her sister, Irma Konkol; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends of all ages.

Anne was born on July 8, 1934, in Manhattan to Anthony and Mary Martinack, who came to this country from Czechoslovakia. Slovak was her first language. Orphaned by age 13, she was then raised by her Aunt Anna and Uncle Paul Hromec, with her cousin Rudy Droppa, all of whom predeceased her.

She was educated in New York City and Newburgh, NY, public schools and graduated from Julia Richman High School in 1952. She attended nursing school and trained at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and became a registered nurse.

It was at Lenox Hill that she met her husband, who was chief resident, and they married in 1957. In 1968, Anne and family moved to Bronxville, where she lived until her death.

A stylish, fun-loving, vibrant, and very funny person, she was completely devoted to her husband, her daughters, and their families. She was known for being just the person to call when you needed help or when you wanted a straightforward opinion.

Her home was a warm and welcoming place. Her generous hospitality is remembered by many.

Anne was a dedicated parishioner at Saint Joseph’s Church for fifty years. She volunteered many hours, working in support of various hospitals through their women’s auxiliaries. A staunch Catholic, she and her husband were a Knight and Dame of the Order of Malta.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, January 13, at St. Joseph's Church. Donations in her name may be made to the Cancer Research Institute, 55 Broadway, Suite 1802, NY, NY 10006, www.cancerresearch.org.
