May 9, 2018: George Bushnell Palmer, Jr., longtime resident of Bronxville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of May 4, 2018. He was 94 years old.

George was born on December 2, 1923, in St. Paul, Minnesota, to George Sr. and Evelyn Palmer. He grew up in Minneapolis and graduated from Washburn High School. He did a post-graduate year at the Blake School and then went on to the University of Minnesota.

In his first year at the university, he was called into service during World War II for the US Army Air Corps. He went through officer training school and then was sent to the war in the European Theater. George was part of the 456 Bomb Group and flew for the 15th Air Force out of Foggia-Cherignola, Italy. He served as a navigator/bombardier on a B-24 bomber. On his seventh bombing mission, his plane was shot down over Hungary. He parachuted out, was captured by the Germans, and spent the last eight months of the war in Europe as a POW. He was liberated by General George Patton, who rode through his prison camp on a tank.

Upon returning from the war, George re-enrolled in the University of Minnesota and completed his degree. He was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and during his senior year one of his fraternity brothers set up a blind date for him where he met Rosemary Schooler. Rosemary and George were married a year after their graduation and were happily married for 68 years.

After their marriage, George and Rosemary moved to Boston, where George attended Harvard Business School. Upon receiving his MBA, he took a job with the Keystone Funds as a securities analyst in Boston. In 1963, George and Rosemary moved to Bronxville, where George had accepted a job with Lehman Brothers. The Palmers spent the next 53 years as residents of Bronxville. George spent his entire career working as a research analyst and then as an institutional equity salesperson for several different financial institutions.

George is survived by his wife, Rosemary Schooler Palmer, his four children, Laura Aronstein, George B. Palmer III, John Palmer, and Stephen Palmer, and his seven grandchildren, Duncan P. Aronstein, Angus P. Aronstein, Ross J. Palmer, Charles E. Palmer, Nathaniel S. Palmer, Ciara M. Palmer, and Louise I. Palmer.

George was a lifelong Mets fan and an avid golfer who twice shot his age at the age of 86. In later life, he became an avid reader and entertained many of his friends and family with regular reviews and commentary on the many books he regularly consumed.

George and Rosemary were active members of Christ Church Bronxville for over 50 years, where George served on the vestry and ushered into his 90s.

He was a fantastic husband, father, and grandfather and will be missed by all.

The Palmers will celebrate the life of their husband/father/grandfather in a private family service at The Nathaniel Witherell in Greenwich, Connecticut.
