Bronxville School PTA “Kiss the Ground” Screening was a Success!

Feb. 14, 2024: On January 30th, the Bronxville PTA Sustainability Committee presented the film Kiss the Ground to the Bronxville Middle School community at the Picture House. It was a wonderful evening with 200 students and parents as well as Middle School Principal Joe Mercora and Middle School Science teachers attending to watch the powerful documentary about a movement to regenerate our planet. After the film, students on the Green Team presented action steps we can take in our daily lives to make a positive impact. Raffle prizes, free popcorn, and the fun of a night out energized students!
The students viewed a 45-minute school version of the full-length movie, which is available on Netflix. The film introduced students to the idea that industrial agriculture, with its reliance on artificial chemical inputs, degrades soil over time and is not sustainable. Although crop yields can be high, the plants don’t offer the same nutritional value. In contrast, regenerative agriculture focuses on restoring the health of the soil, replacing chemicals with organic matter, rebuilding soil structure, and preventing erosion. Members of the Bronxville Green Committee were on hand to provide information about the Village’s Food Scrap Recycling program. Diverting food scraps from the waste stream is an impactful action we can all make daily. It helps to reduce pollution and methane gas emissions that result from putting food in the trash while instead creating compost. Hundreds of Bronxville households are participating in the program and making a difference – in 2023, Bronxville sent 45 tons of food scraps to a commercial composter! The Bronxville Green Committee also provided information about healthy landscaping practices and Bronxville Pollinator Pathways. Eliminating pesticides and incorporating native plants in our yards are important steps to create a healthy environment for ourselves and insects and wildlife. The film screening was a success in bringing many of our community groups together to learn about an important issue. Thank you to the Bronxville School PTA for hosting the event and to the Bronxville Picture House for partnering with them to make it possible. We look forward to future events!

We believe everyone can make a difference by adopting simple, sustainable practices in daily life so we can work together to protect what we love -- our families, our homes and our town.
