"Team Chapel" To Run NY City Marathon To Raise Money Scholarship Fund

By Kim Zwisdak, Village Lutheran Church & The Chapel School

Oct. 20, 2021: On Sunday, November 7, 2021, members of Village Lutheran Church and The Chapel School community will run the TCS New York City Marathon on behalf of The Chapel School Scholarship Fund.

"This will be an unprecedented and historic year for the TCS New York City Marathon as one of the most iconic New York sporting events makes its return," said Ted Metellus, Race Director, TCS New York City Marathon. "As we stage a safe and memorable race for the 50th running, this year's marathon will showcase our great city's strength, inspiration, and determination."

The 2021 TCS New York City Marathon will commemorate the race's 50th running with runners from all over the world participating in-person and virtually. The marathon began in 1970 and has become one of the most anticipated annual mass sporting events in New York City and the largest marathon in the world with 53,640 finishers in 2019. This year's marathon will once again bring together people of all ages and abilities reflecting the resilience and strength of the running community.

According to the Development Office Program Manager, Kim Zwisdak, "All money raised by the team members goes to help support scholarship assistance for deserving students that otherwise may not be able to attend The Chapel School." The private, Christian day school has received gifts totaling over $7,000. "Aside from committing to raise $3,000 for The Chapel School Scholarship Fund, each runner has to train physically and mentally to run the 26.2 mile long course. We are so thankful for our Team Chapel runners and their supporters."

The Team Coach and Senior Pastor of the Church and School, Rev. Dr. Robert Hartwell, helped form the charity team several years ago. Team Chapel runs in the New York City full marathon to raise money for scholarships and Team Chapel Arts runs in the half marathon in support of The Chapel School Art & Drama Programs. Speaking about the dedication of the runners, he said, "To commit to a marathon, both physically and mentally, is a testimony to their care for our school and students." Team Chapel's runners for 2021 include Ralph Schoene and Claudia Sadowski.

Ralph Schoene has been a member of the Village Lutheran Church (Bronxville) since 1992. He has been a Board of Trustees member and has served as church treasurer. He has completed 26 marathons, including the first Team Chapel NYC Marathon event in 2011, and numerous half marathons.

Claudia Sadowski is a wife and mother of two. She has been a runner for over 15 years, but did not tackle long-distance running until 2013 when she ran her first half marathon. She has now run over 20 half marathons and 11 marathons. Claudia suffered an ankle fracture in February and is slowly getting back into running. "I am excited to make the NYC marathon my comeback race!" This will be her fourth NYC marathon and she is looking forward to fundraising for The Chapel School Scholarship Fund. Claudia's children have attended The Chapel School since 2018 and have benefited from Chapel's focused approach to education; offering children the opportunity to take ownership and pride in their efforts and accomplishments.
