Pictured: William Bates, prolific architect in Bronxville
By BHC Board Member Nancy Marshall
May 14, 2025: The Bronxville Historical Conservancy (BHC) is again hosting its well-known “historic house tour.” The 2025 House and Walking Tour is scheduled to take place Sunday, June 1st, from 2 to 4 p.m. After a seven-year hiatus from the Conservancy’s calendar of events, this year’s program has been thoughtfully reimagined to include a neighborhood walking tour as well as entry to a single house interior and will highlight William Bates’ enduring legacy as one of Bronxville’s earliest and most prolific architects. This members-only event will showcase the interior of one of Bates’ late-19th-century homes, meticulously restored to meet the needs of a modern family, as well as several neighborhood house exteriors that detail Bates’ extensive work in Lawrence Park.
The afternoon's goal is to provide a rich understanding of the architectural and historical significance of Bates’ designs. To further this goal, the BHC is grateful to be joined by a team of architects. Bronxville architect and BHC Board member Maggie Marrone will present the house tour, and Bronxville architects Kate Fixmer of KWF Design, Richard Gonzalez of Richard Gonzalez Architect, and Saira Aktar of Pratt Black Architects will guide the walking tours. This team brings a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and a sincere appreciation of the lasting value of Bates’ work.
The BHC’s House Tour has featured Bronxville’s many historic homes, including the Abijah Morgan House, the well-known “Owl House,” and the home of General Custer’s widow, Elizabeth Custer. “We are thrilled to be planning and presenting the house tour again and excited to offer the addition of a walking tour as a complement to the house tour. The expanded program promises to present William Bates’ work in a very compelling and comprehensive way,” said BHC Co-Chair Suzanne Davis.
The BHC was established in 1998 to preserve Bronxville’s unique character and rich history. The Conservancy furthers its mission through the presentation of programs, publications, lectures, and special events.
