Dining Out with Karen Talbot: The New Stillmeadow Gourmet in Bronxville

By Karen Talbot

Stillmeadow Gourmet:  65 Pondfield Road, Bronxville, NY  914-779-5500

Sep. 2, 2015:  The first person I met when I checked out a new store in town, Stillmeadow Gourmet, was Noelle Ifshin, a restaurant and hospitality consultant, who saw this space and felt it was perfect over another site in Brooklyn for Stillmeadow Gourmet.

This bright and airy store just opened on the former site of Gourmet to Go, on the corner of Pondfield Road and Garden Avenue. It’s young and attractive owner and chef, Kate Brewster-Duffy, named it after the farm in Stonington, CT, where she grew up. Stillmeadow Farm has been owned for over 50 years by the Brewster family, and, originally a horse farm, it now raises alpacas. Only traditional and all-natural farming techniques are used in preserving land and producing the finest animals.

For Breakfast:  This take-out food store prides itself in “providing fresh, local and environmentally conscience and sustainable prepared foods for the culinary enthusiast.” Breakfast Starters can include a biscuit or croissant with ham and cheese, seasonal fruit, assorted baked goods, and homemade granola.

For Lunch: For lunch there is a variety of green salads, made with creative ingredients to which you can add grilled chicken, turkey breast, or grilled salmon. Or you can choose from 12 specialty sandwiches or gourmet salads, which include chicken, tuna, egg, and Kate’s famous coleslaw.

For Dinner:  Kate’s vision for dinner is to provide all the ingredients for a delicious dinner to take home.  There are eight varieties of entrees, such lasagna, shrimp skewers, meatloaf, chicken pot pie, and rotisserie chicken, in assorted sized helpings. Don’t forget the Stillmeadow sides: pesto pasta, cold sesame noodles, and assorted roasted vegetables, among the many choices. The store is spot-on with the newest food selection of quinoa bowls, made to order, with a selection of four veggies enhanced with grilled chicken, rotisserie turkey, tofu, or grilled salmon.

There are many artisan drinks with no artificial ingredients and organic coffee and tea selections. This gourmet food store also has cheese and crackers, nuts, and lots of vegan and gluten-free choices. In addition, there are daily soups, quiche, and grilled cheese, etc. For dessert, they carry ice cream from Arethusa Farm in Litchfield, CT, and Steve’s in Brooklyn, plus assorted cookies and candy.

To give you an example of prices:  a whole rotisserie chicken with two small sides to serve two people is $19.00. Add organic spring greens, hothouse cucumbers, grape tomatoes, and shaved red onion for $7.00 and you have spent a total of $26.00. Who wants to cook when you can buy your dinner and eat healthy too!

At the rear of the store a local photographer, Taylor Dunn, has her charming portraits of children and families on display. In our special hometown village of Bronxville, Stillmeadow Gourmet wants its customers to feel a sense of community when they shop there, and we wish them great success on their endeavor.
