Remembering The Grand Old Gramatan Hotel

Hotel Gramatan

By Sarah Thornton Clifford

Nov. 20, 2024: I was in Bronxville Village Hall last week on the second floor and saw a framed picture of the grand old Gramatan Hotel.

The hotel, which was owned by the Lawrence family, was still in the village when I was young and growing up in Bronxville. I have fond memories of running down a long hallway and having brunch there with my family after church.

Sadly, the hotel, which was 67 years old, facing losses and in need of a renovation and a new vision for its future, was torn down in 1972.

In an article in the New York Times in 1972, family member George Lawrence, whose greatgrandfather William V. Lawrence, built the hotel, described the final decision to tear down the hotel as “very, very painful.”

If it was still around today, I'm certain it would be the site of many Bronxville events and happenings as it had been in its heyday or perhaps a fabulous condominium.

In 2019, Marilynn Hill, Co-Chair of The Bronxville Historical Conservancy, wrote an excellent article about the hotel.
