To the Editor:
Do most of us really see ourselves as being our true age? I don’t think so. We take care of ourselves, walk, work out, swim, play competitive sports, and live well. So, at my age, I thought there was no reason to join Gramatan Village. I wasn't there yet. I would join when I needed their services.
Well, in late December, I had my left knee replaced. I left the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City after four days and went to The Osborn for eight days of rehab. Then I came home. No problem, until I needed to go back to Special Surgery for my six-week checkup. My friends were away or busy, and my daughter was unavailable. What was I going to do? I couldn't drive and I began to panic!
Fortunately, I had joined Gramatan Village (GV) the year before! I called Julie and Kathryn and explained my dilemma in a very high-pitched voice! They said, "Not to worry, we will get you there."
One of my former students, who is a fabulous volunteer for GV, offered to pick me up, took me into the city, waited for me, and drove me home. During our ride home, we had a great discussion about hot dogs, and he stopped his car by the vendor at the top of the hill on Midland and bought us both hot dogs! What a treat – and what a wonderful volunteer! Thanks again, Bill.
My message is simple! You are never too young to join Gramatan Village! Until you need them, you can help them. Be a member, be a supporter, and be a volunteer! You are welcome at all ages. It gives you an opportunity to support a truly worthwhile community organization, meet new people, enjoy numerous activities, outings, and luncheons. I did and am so glad I did! You may never need their services, but by joining you will know that there will always be someone there "covering your back" if and when you need it.
Thank you, Gramatan Village!
P.S. And I almost forgot. The dues are 75% tax deductible. Great news at this time of year!

Bronxville, NY 10708

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.
While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.
Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.
The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
