Two Break-ins (One Attempted) in Bronxville this Past Week; Police Work Overtime

July 6, 2011:  Bronxville police have been unusually busy this week working on the arrest of two individuals, one concerning the attempted break-in on Homesdale Road that occurred last Wednesday, June 29, and the other the arrest of Gary Greene, caught trespassing on the property of a Locust Lane address on the same day.  Police do not believe Greene was involved in the Homesdale Road incident.

With regard to the attempted break-in on Homesdale Road, Chief Christopher Satriale reports that the police are in possession of new incriminating evidence, but that the perpetrator has not been apprehended yet.  The investigation is ongoing.

The incident on Homesdale caused quite a stir in Bronxville the afternoon it occurred.  First, a resident on Homesdale Road reported there was a suspicious person on the property of a neighbor and that the individual (male black wearing a white tank top and carrying a backpack) was apparently attempting to gain entry to the home.  At about the same time, the alarm system went off in the Homedale home.

Officers responded immediately and a foot pursuit ensued as police chased the male through the Hunts Woods area and toward the City of Mount Vernon.  A police "hotline" was broadcast to area departments, and a multi-jurisdictional search followed.

Included in that search were canine officers from the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, the City of Mount Vernon, and the Town of Eastchester.  The search was terminated after approximately six hours.  Since then, several items of evidence have been located, and the Bronxville detectives are currently following all leads in an ongoing investigation.

With regard to the arrest of Gary Greene, Bronxville police apprehended Greene early Wednesday morning (2:50 am) after a trespassing violation led to more significant charges.  Officer Van der Leeuw of the Bronxville Police Department first apprehended Yonkers resident Gary Greene, 43, after he was caught trespassing on the property of a Locust Lane address.  Greene was then brought to the Bronxville Police Station, where further investigation revealed that he was in possession of some stolen property taken from other Locust Lane residences.

Greene was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the 5th degree, a Class A misdemeanor.  Greene has an extensive criminal record to his name, including over 20 felony arrests and 60 arrest charges.  His first arrest dates back to 1984, and he was previously charged a little less than a decade ago in connection with a Bronxville burglary.  Greene was arraigned in the Bronxville court and is currently being detained in county jail.  He is due back in Bronxville court later this month.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
