Homesdale Road Burglar Arrested after Clever Sleuth Work

August 24, 2011: Bronxville Police Chief Christopher Satriale announced that the man who broke into a home on Homesdale Road two months ago (June 27) and was seen running from the house in the woods in nearby Mount Vernon has been arrested.

Osie Austin of 168 Audubon Avenue in Mount Vernon was arrested Tuesday morning, August 16, when Bronxville detectives Nicholas DeYoung and Richard Anderson came calling on him in New Rochelle. DeYoung and Anderson had been working "tirelessly" on the case since the burglary two months ago, Satriale said.

Austin, who has racked up four felony convictions in his young life, was charged with second-degree burglary, a felony. He was accused of breaking into a Homesdale Road house in Bronxville.

The incident occurred at 2:49 pm on June 27, when a Homesdale Road resident observed a man looking into a neighbor's window. At about the same time, the perpetrator set off an alarm by cutting through a window screen. The alarm and the neighbor's call caused police to race to the area, but the intruder slipped away after last being seen on Central Parkway at 6:00 pm in Mount Vernon.

According to a report in the Journal News, "During the chase, Bronxville police found a backpack he dropped in the woods. It contained a Metro Card. Bronxville detectives went to the New York City Police, county police and the Westchester County Intelligence Center for help. They established that he took the Number 40 Bee Line bus twice between Mount Vernon, Bronxville and White Plains. 'And they got a picture of him taking the bus,' Satriale said."

Bronxville police officers then went to high schools, seeking help to identify the man in the picture. An employee at Mount Vernon High School helped them identify Austin. Police said they entered his house with a search warrant and found evidence linking him to the Bronxville burglary. He is being held in the county jail without bail.

Austin was convicted of third-degree robbery, a felony, in Mount Vernon in February 2008; of petty larceny, a misdemeanor, in White Plains in November 2008; and of two attempted burglaries, both felonies, in Queens in November 2008.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
