Apr. 4, 2012:  The Bronxville Committee for the Non-Partisan Nomination and Election of School Trustees (NPC) is pleased to announce that it has selected two candidates for Bronxville School trustee.  They are incumbent Chris Atayan and Jeffrey Rohr.

A "Candidate Meet and Greet" reception will be held on Sunday, April 22, from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm at the Bronxville Public Library.  All Bronxville residents are welcome and strongly urged to attend this informal gathering at which the two candidates will be available to answer questions from the community.

The two candidates were nominated by the NPC to run in the election for the two open trustee positions on the Bronxville School board to be held on Tuesday, May 15.

A biography of each of the candidates is set forth below.

Christopher Atayan

Chris Atayan and his wife, René, have been residents of Bronxville since 1997.  Before moving to Bronxville, the Atayans lived for six years in the Bronxville P.O. area. They have two children, both of whom attend The Bronxville School:  a daughter in eleventh grade and a son in seventh grade.

Chris is currently chairman and CEO of AMCON, a $1.2 billion distributor of consumer products.  Prior to his current position, Chris worked for 24 years in the investment banking and private equity groups of Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and PaineWebber.

Chris has been a trustee of The Bronxville School since 2009 and was financial advisor to The Alexander Dawson School, a private school in Colorado.

Chris earned his BBA in finance and economics from the University of Wisconsin and attended the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Jeffrey Rohr

Jeff and his wife, Michele, have been residents of Bronxville since 2004, having previously lived in Chicago.  They have three children, all of whom attend The Bronxville School:  a daughter in ninth grade, a son in second grade, and a son in kindergarten.

Jeff is the vice chairman and CFO of Deloitte LLP and the CFO of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu.  Prior to his current position, he was the regional managing partner of the mid-Atlantic region.

Jeff is a member of the board of The Community Fund of Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe.  He is a member of the board of trustees and the executive committee and is chairman of the audit committee of the Florida State University Foundation, and he is a member of the board of trustees of the Florida State University College of Business and a member of its College of Business Hall of Fame.

Jeff earned his BS in accounting from Florida State University.

The Committee for Non-Partisan Nomination and Election of School Trustees was formed in 1936 to ensure that the election of trustees of The Bronxville School is conducted on a non-partisan basis.  The NPC, which consists of three elected representatives from each of Bronxville's seven election districts, solicits qualified residents who are interested in serving as school trustee and nominates a slate of candidates to run in the school district election in May.

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
