Waldo Is Hiding in 24 Bronxville Stores: Therefore, Where's Waldo?

Jul. 17, 2013: Things are heating up in Bronxville, and not just because of the summer heat wave. Word has it that Waldo, of the popular children's book series Where's Waldo, had such a great time here last year celebrating his 25th anniversary and meeting so many friends that he's back.

He's kind of back, that is. Waldo won't actually surface in person until the big party at Womrath Books, 76 Pondfield Road, on Wednesday, July 31, at 3:00 pm, when he helps owners Gene and Wanda Sgarlata award prizes to some of the keenest detectives around.

For the second summer, Waldo is asking his Bronxville friends, old friends and new ones he hasn't met yet, to find him as he hides in 24 stores in the village during July.

Register at Womrath Books to get the scoop on where Waldo might be hiding, as well as the passport that local merchants will stamp when sleuths spot him.

Anyone returning a filled passport by July 30 will receive a sticker and a coupon toward the purchase of a Where's Waldo book. Those passports will be entered into the drawing for all kinds of Where's Waldo prizes at the party. This year, winners must be present at the party to claim their prizes, so mark your calendars!

Sgarlata estimates that about 100 participants have registered so far for the hunt and reminds anyone wanting to join in that there's still plenty of time. Even some teenagers came out this year to be part of the fun. And, Sgarlata said, "How could I say no to the 25-year-old who came in and said he had grown up with Waldo?"

Twenty-four Bronxville businesses are participating in the search for Waldo this year, including Tryforos & Pernice Florists, SilverSpoon, Arista Camera, Savanna at Home, Mrs. Morgan's Flower Shop, Chantilly Patisserie, Breezeway, Kensington Paper, The Silk Road, Bronxville Running Company, Provisions for Pets, Fierson's, Weezie D., Dobbs & Bishop Fine Cheese, Häagen-Dazs, SF Express, Topps Bakery, Bronxville Public Library, and Womrath Bookshop.

"It's a give-back endeavor," Sgarlata said in describing the event, "and an effort to remind residents to shop local."

Bronxville Overview

Bronxville is a quaint village (one square mile) located just 16 miles north of midtown Manhattan (roughly 30 minutes on the train) and has a population of approximately 6,500. It is known as a premier community with an excellent public school (K-12) and easy access to Manhattan. Bronxville offers many amenities including an attractive business district, a hospital (Lawrence Hospital), public paddle and tennis courts, fine dining at local restaurants, two private country clubs and a community library.

While the earliest settlers of Bronxville date back to the first half of the 18th century, the history of the modern suburb of Bronxville began in 1890 when William Van Duzer Lawrence purchased a farm and commissioned the architect, William A. Bates, to design a planned community of houses for well-known artists and professionals that became a thriving art colony. This community, now called Lawrence Park, is listed on the National register of Historic Places and many of the homes still have artists’ studios. A neighborhood association within Lawrence Park called “The Hilltop Association” keeps this heritage alive with art shows and other events for neighbors.

Bronxville offers many charming neighborhoods as well as a variety of living options for residents including single family homes, town houses, cooperatives and condominiums. One of the chief benefits of living in “the village” is that your children can attend the Bronxville School.

The Bronxville postal zone (10708, known as “Bronxville PO”) includes the village of Bronxville as well as the Chester Heights section of Eastchester, parts of Tuckahoe and the Lawrence Park West, Cedar Knolls, Armour Villa and Longvale sections of Yonkers. Many of these areas have their own distinct character. For instance, the Armour Villa section has many historic homes and even has its own newsletter called “The Villa Voice” which reports on neighborhood news.
