Summer Program for Teens: Writers Week at Sarah Lawrence College

By Patricia Pasquale, Sarah Lawrence College

Feb. 19, 2025: For more than 25 years, Writers Week at Sarah Lawrence College has offered creative young people an immersive week-long experience with creative writing and the performance arts. The largest program run by Sarah Lawrence’s noncredit Writing Institute, in collaboration with the College’s Theatre program, Writers Week is open to students ages 14 to 18 from around the world. Wildly popular, the sessions have historically filled up quickly, and could not meet the demand of eager young creatives. To address that, this year the College is expanding Writers Week to three sessions throughout the summer, with two taking place on campus and one taking place online.

On each day of the five-day program, participants attend writing and theatre workshops led by prose writers, poets, and performance artists, many of whom are alumni or current students in the College’s MFA Theatre and MFA Writing programs. Rooted in the Sarah Lawrence College tradition of close interaction between student and teacher, each class is limited to 18 students and is led by two teaching artists, and students meet in small groups with workshop leaders. Guest author visits bring contemporary writers into the classroom, including recent visits from authors like Isabel Banta, Victoria Lee, Camryn Garrett, Moses Utomi, Angela Velez, and Nino Cipri. Writers Week features faculty and student readings throughout the week and culminates in a joyous celebration of student work on the final day of the program.

Last summer, Virtual Writers Week brought together 52 students from three countries, while the on-campus session gathered 81 students from 15 states. This year’s two on-campus sessions will run from July 21-25 and August 4-8, while the virtual session will run from July 7-11. Registration is now open – learn more at the Writers Week website!

The Writing Institute is holding a virtual information session for those interested in learning more about Writers Week:
