Jan. 24, 2024: The Bronxville School Board of Education met on January 18, 2024.

Report by Board President
Bronxville School Board of Education President Susan Conniff said that the school did an international trip to the Dominican Republic before the pandemic. She said there would not be a school-sponsored trip this year; however, some parents have stepped up to make this trip happen. Conniff noted that there are many organizations in which students can interact with international students.

Conniff said that the tenure process is underway, and they welcome letters from the community about the candidates.

Various Happenings at the School
Bronxville School Superintendent Dr. Rachel Kelly said rehearsals have begun for the High School Musical, which will be performed on Feb. 8, 9, and 10.

There was a workshop for the Middle School on January 23rd about internet safety.

A book vending machine will arrive at the school next month. Students can earn books from the bending machine for their "upstanding behavior."

The first grade created a conflict-resolution tool to help students resolve conflicts during recess.

The Elementary School Play "Hercules" will be performed on January 27 and 28th.

Bronxville Promise in Action
Dr. Koetke, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, introduced elementary and middle school students to provide examples of the Bronxville Promise in Action in these schools.

One example the elementary school students shared was monthly school themes. For example, in September, students in the Elementary School submitted their "Big 3" ideas about how to build and foster a peaceful and productive school and class community. The most common ideas were to act with respect, responsibility, and safety. In October, the theme was courage; in November, the theme was gratitude. Other monthly themes coming up include empathy and engaged citizenship.

The students also talked about the holiday food drive, the Toys for Tots drive, and improvements to the blacktop area on the school playground. This area now has several games, including Hop Scotch, 4-Square, an obstacle course, and other playful surfaces.

Two middle school students discussed the middle school ambassador program in which 7th and 8th graders help younger students prepare for middle school. They show students what they need to know. For example, they give them tours of the middle school, teach them how to read a schedule, and give them their locks. The middle school ambassadors also speak at a parent middle school orientation meeting.

Off-Cycle Tenure Candidate Approved
Dr. Kelly made an off-cycle tenure recommendation for Marissa Kolar, a teaching assistant in special education. The Board approved this recommendation.

Early Retirement Incentive
Dr. Kelly also discussed an early notification teacher retirement incentive, which will result in needed cost savings in the school budget next year. Teachers must notify the school by February 1 if they want to take advantage of this incentive.

Financial Report
Assistant Superintendent for Business Dan Carlin discussed the school's December financial summary. The good news is that the revenue side has a projected surplus of about $600k due to higher nonresident student tuition, special ed tuition, and interest earnings.

Carlin also talked about the first draft of the proposed budget for next year. Based on the numbers presented, Carlin said that more work needs to be done so that the tax levy for this budget is within the tax cap of 2.15%.

Trip to Finland
Dan Carlin spoke about a new grant from the Bronxville School Foundation that will fund a trip to Finland for two administrators to study what they are doing and see what we can learn from them.

Facilities
Dan Carlin said the school's outdoor classroom is complete. It is currently covered in snow, but it turned out very well, and landscaping will be added in the spring.

Dan Carlin also said that the school is awaiting schematic drawings and an estimate for the enclosure for the flood mitigation pumps.

The school is planning a security vestibule and office at the Pondfield Road entrance. There are already security vestibules at the elementary school and atrium entrances.

Carlin reported that there were no issues in the school during the recent rain event.

Finally, he said that the school is prioritizing items in its 5-year plan.

New Policy
The Board approved a policy related to workplace violence prevention.
