Bronxville High School Sophomore, Andrew Doyle, Wins National Gold Medal for Drawing

Apr. 7, 2021: Bronxville High School sophomore Andrew Doyle won a national Gold Medal for his “Skeleton” drawing in the prestigious 98th annual 2021 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.

Doyle’s Gold Medal-winning drawing, “Skeleton.”

“This piece is really special to me as it represents my growing interests in anatomy while also displaying my own artistic style,” said Doyle, who completed his drawing as a freshman, using colored pencils on black paper.

Doyle’s work was recognized as one of the most outstanding works among his peers and was selected for its excellence in originality, technical skills and the emergence of a personal voice or vision. More than 80,000 students submitted nearly 230,000 works of art and writing to the competition this year, and 1,917 works – less than 1% – received national medals.

Art teacher Courtney Alan described Doyle as an unbelievably creative and talented artist, who is committed to his studies in art and interest in anatomy.

“I started by taking photos of the skeleton in our classroom, trying to find a creative angle that revealed the interior of the skull,” Doyle said. “After I shot the reference photo, I worked to bring interest to every highlight and shadow by adjusting the hue and saturation, using Photoshop. I lightly sketched out the anatomical forms in graphite and layered the vibrant pinks, purples and oranges with Prismacolor pencils. I am grateful for the [judges’] recognition of my effort to capture a unique view of the body.”

In June, his drawing will be published in Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’ online gallery at artandwriting.org. He will also be recognized in the organization’s 2021 Yearbook, and his work may be featured in Scholastic’s “The Best Teen Art” anthology.

As a national medalist, Doyle will be recognized at an awards ceremony, which will be held virtually on June 9.

Presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for young artists and writers in grades 7–12.
