Mar. 7, 2018:  Concordia College is delighted to welcome J. Christopher Giancarlo to the April 9 installment of its Jacobson Global Lecture Series.

Giancarlo was unanimously confirmed as chairman of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission ("CFTC") by the U.S. Senate in August of 2017. Prior to becoming chairman, he was designated acting chairman and was nominated by President Trump to serve as the chairman for a term that expires in April of 2019. Giancarlo had served as a CFTC commissioner, nominated by President Obama, since his swearing in in June of 2014 after unanimous consent by the U.S. Senate earlier that month. 

Chairman Giancarlo, a leading expert on public policy involving technology and financial markets, will talk about the moral and ethical standards necessary for a regulator to remain independent and non-political. He will share his thoughts on the delicate balance of maintaining free market competition while protecting the public from the dangers of fraud, abuse, and illegal practices. 

Before entering public service, Giancarlo served as the executive vice president of GFI Group Inc., a financial services firm. Prior to joining GFI, he was executive vice president and U.S. legal counsel of Fenics Software and was a corporate partner in the New York law firm of Brown Raysman Millstein Felder & Steiner. Giancarlo joined Brown Raysman from Giancarlo & Gleiberman, a law practice that he founded.

Giancarlo was also a founding co-editor-in-chief of eSecurities, Trading and Regulation on the Internet (Leader Publications). He has testified three times before Congress regarding the implementation of the Dodd-Frank Act and has written and spoken extensively on public policy, legal, and other matters involving technology and the financial markets.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with Government Department Honors from Skidmore College. Giancarlo received his law degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Law, where he was an associate research editor at the Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law and president of the law school’s International Law Society. He has been a member of the bar of the State of New York since 1985. 

For nearly three decades, the Jacobson Global Lecture Series (renamed in 2004) has brought to Concordia’s campus distinguished speakers from diverse international fields, enlightening students, faculty, and the community at large.

The lecture will take place on Monday, April 9, at 7:00 pm at the Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts on the campus of Concordia College. The event is free and open to all.
