Georgia Hunter, Author of 'We Were the Lucky Ones,' to Speak at Concordia College on Holocaust Remembrance Day Thursday, April 12

Mar. 28, 2018: On Thursday, April 12, which is Holocaust Remembrance Day for 2018, Concordia College will welcome Georgia Hunter to its Books & Coffee series. Hunter will discuss her book We Were the Lucky Ones, a New York Times bestseller. The lecture will begin at 7:00 pm in Sommer Center for Worship and the Performing Arts at Concordia.
Hunter was 15 years old when she learned that she came from a family of Holocaust survivors. As she grew, she began unearthing her family’s history and discovered stories she knew were too remarkable to remain untold.
Written as a novel, We Were the Lucky Ones follows the Kurc family of Radom, Poland, whose efforts to survive after the 1939 German invasion left them scattered from Brazil to Siberia.
From Publishers Weekly: “The Kurc family’s final triumph is not tied to the defeat of the Nazis, but to the family’s survival and reunion against impossible odds. … Hunter sidesteps hollow sentimentality and nihilism, revealing instead the beautiful complexity and ambiguity of life in this extraordinarily moving tale.”
Named a People magazine’s “Best New Book” in January of this year, We Were the Lucky Ones was recently selected by Harper’s Bazaar as one of 14 Books You Need to Read in February and by Glamour magazine as one of its Best Books to Read in 2017. The novel has been translated into Italian, Dutch, and Polish, with more editions on the way.
The Israeli parliament established Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom Hashoah) to be observed on the 27th day of Nisan of the Hebrew calendar, a date that changes each year in the United States.
The date for the internationally recognized Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Observances and remembrance activities occur throughout the Week of Remembrance, which runs from the Sunday before Holocaust Remembrance Day through the following Sunday.

Bronxville Public Library
The Bronxville Public Library traces its origins back to 1875, when it was a small lending library housed in a room attached to the “Bronxville Model School.” The Library was officially chartered in 1906 and moved into the Village Hall Building. The needs of the library grew with the town and, in 1942, a new standalone building was erected, which is where the Library is today. Over the years, the Library was renovated and expanded to meet the needs of the community.
The Library has wonderful resources for adults and children and offers a comfortable and relaxing environment. The Library also houses a fine art collection, consisting principally of Bronxville painters and sculptors.
The Library offers special events, art exhibitions, and programs for adults, young adults and children. All events are open to the public, unless otherwise indicated.
